For years, Christian struggled with self-doubt and uncertainty about employment, relying on social assistance while searching for stability. Finding a job felt like an impossible goal—until Christian connected with SECC’s employment services.
Through personalized career counselling, Christian built a resume, honed interview skills, and gained confidence. A job readiness workshop provided valuable insights into the hiring process, preparing Christian for real opportunities. The turning point came at a career fair hosted by SECC and The Bridge, where Christian’s newfound skills made an impression.
With encouragement from SECC’s team, Christian applied for a position at a local packing warehouse and was hired as a hand jack operator. This job not only brought financial stability but reignited Christian’s passion for work. Today, Christian continues to grow in the role, gaining new skills and inspiring others to believe in their potential.

IMPACT THE SAMUELS FAMILY
When the Samuels family connected with South Essex Community Council (SECC), they were struggling. Neither parent was employed, their children were falling behind in school, and food insecurity was a daily challenge.
SECC’s Ignite program stepped in immediately. The children were enrolled in programming while their father received employment support through the SECC’s employment services To ease financial strain, SECC discreetly provided food at school and arranged for weekly hot meals. Staff also collaborated with teachers to tailor support, leading to significant improvements in academics and social connections.
Understanding the need for continued engagement, SECC provided barrier-free access to PA Day, March Break, and Winter Break camps—covering transportation, meals, and field trips. With this support, the family gained stability. Dad secured full-time work, food insecurity ended, and the children are thriving—reading at home, completing homework, and excelling in school. They are now excited to attend SECC’s Summer Camp at no cost.
