Elizabeth has Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) and Type 1 Diabetes, and we’re looking for someone dedicated, confident, and relatable to help her thrive. Role Overview:
As Elizabeth’s support worker, you’ll play a pivotal role in empowering her to achieve greater independence and engage with her community. This role involves providing guidance, companionship, and a calm, steady presence in her day-to-day life.
Key Responsibilities:
- Skill Building: Assist Elizabeth in developing practical life skills, including planning her day, managing money, and preparing meals.
- Community Integration: Support Elizabeth in exploring community activities, such as trips to the library or other events that interest her. Help her discover new hobbies and engage with her surroundings.
- Safety and Advocacy: Ensure Elizabeth’s safety during activities and advocate for her preferences and needs.
- Collaboration: Work closely with Elizabeth’s family to align your support efforts with her goals and routines.
- Long-Term Commitment: Be a consistent, steady presence in Elizabeth’s life, forming a meaningful, long-term connection.
- Learning and Adaptability: Take the time to learn about Elizabeth’s syndrome, diabetes, and individual needs to provide tailored support.
- Behavioral Support: Handle challenging behaviors with patience, determination, and a calm demeanor while helping Elizabeth adjust to new routines and environments.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities is a plus but not required.
- Personal Attributes: Patience, kindness, and a great sense of humor to match Elizabeth’s cheerful spirit.
- Resilience and Flexibility: The ability to remain calm and composed during challenging situations and adapt to Elizabeth’s evolving interests and needs.
- Transportation: Access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license for community outings.
- First Aid & CPR Certification: Current certification is required or must be obtained before starting.
- Police Check: Willing to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Clearance through the Windsor Police
